America’s City: Washington D.C.

I’m back, and boy does it feel great. So here are some updates:

What’s New?

After a long spring semester back at Wake Forest University, it is finally summer for me! Though I struggled and constantly felt nostalgic during the semester, I passed my final exams, and you know what that means… I can officially call myself a senior student at Wake Forest! Time flies!

Unfortunately, this summer I will not be in and out of airports, lugging around luggage and documenting another culture. For the next 3 months, I decided to take the nomadic hat off and put on the professional one. Even though I will be a summer intern in Washington D.C., it certainly does not mean I will stop traveling. It will just be within the District of Columbia limits!

Only a week into my summer, I have already learned that there are so many options and opportunities in one, single city. From touring all of the free Smithsonian museums to budgeting properly while also eating my way through the city, this girl has a lot of ground to cover. But do not worry, as I can guarantee that I will have plenty of posts coming to you soon.

Summer Opportunities

To give a little background, I am currently interning at American Rivers, an environmental non-governmental organization that works to protect and preserve our nation’s rivers. Amongst so many other incredible things, American Rivers has provided an amazing internship opportunity for me thus far. With a tight-knit and kind-hearted office staff in Washington D.C., and a unified vision of what needs to be done to protect our rivers, I am already learning so much.

As the Marketing and Communications intern, I work directly with the Communications side of things for American Rivers. I am working daily on my favorite site (WordPress!) and learning the behind-the-scenes for everything that goes into keeping a professional site running. As an owner of a simple and small blog, it is truly amazing to have access to something so substantial that makes such a difference.

I am also working with social media consistency, primarily Twitter. I have begun to understand the specific language necessary to garner traffic and response on social media. All of these components are very important when it comes to success for any business or organization, even my own, small-scale blog!

This work has inspired me to make an active effort to keep up with my blog and social media accounts. Be sure to follow them if you haven’t! Though I may not be nomadic and traveling the world, I am doing something. So expect more from me as time moves forward during my summer in Washington D.C.!
